“Golden” is a story of personal transformation as Will Watson takes on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and tackling life’s challenges with the help of his dog, Mia, after moving to Australia.
Review
Grief, Transformation, Belonging
Numerous research on the therapeutic advantages of pets have shown that finding comfort in the link between humans and animals is a universal experience in the midst of life’s struggles. S.S. Turner uses this deep connection to examine issues of transformation and loss in Golden. A story that explores the difficulties of relocation, the loss of a cherished pet, and the pursuit of purpose in strange places is told via the experience of Will Watson, a man who was uprooted to Australia. The death of Will’s golden retriever, Mia, serves as the emotional center of the book and serves as the impetus for Will’s development and search for acceptance.
The novel presents a unique balance of humor and deep introspection, with standout moments such as the awkward cultural encounters in Australia and Will’s introspective struggles. The dynamic between Will and Mia is a touching exploration of unconditional love and the healing power it provides. For me, one of the most memorable parts was the depiction of Mia’s lasting impact on Will, even after her passing, reminding readers of the irreplaceable imprint pets leave on our lives.
Those looking for fast-paced action or plot-heavy narratives might not appreciate the slower, reflective nature of the book. However, readers who enjoy character-driven stories with emotional depth and reflections on personal growth will find Golden deeply moving. The book shares similarities with Marley & Me by John Grogan, as both works highlight the profound bonds between humans and their dogs.
Like rays of sunlight breaking through a storm, Golden reminds us of the beauty found in life’s hardest moments and the importance of embracing transformation to find peace and belonging.
