Book Review: Immortal Sins by Maurice D. Winterborn

immortal sins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of the most poignant moments in Immortal Sins comes when a character, exhausted by the relentless brutality of war, reflects, “Peace is not found in the absence of war but in the hearts of those who choose unity over division, even in the face of death.” This sentiment resonates deeply within a world scarred by conflict, both external and internal, and echoes the real-world struggles of humanity striving for unity in the midst of chaos. The thematic undercurrent of this quote draws parallels to the constant battle between division and unity we see in modern times, and the book makes a compelling case for the resilience of the human spirit when confronted with overwhelming odds.

In Immortal Sins, Maurice Winterborn crafts a narrative where gods, kings, and commoners alike are swept into a war that has consumed Haven. Dimitri Savandiel, a once-loyal soldier, witnesses his home destroyed as deceit and betrayal allow invaders from Vivaria to seize control of his kingdom. The story plunges readers into a harrowing world where hope is a scarce resource, and loyalty is as fragile as the peace they once knew. As the northern lands cling to the remnants of their shattered ideals, the invading southern forces, led by New Gods, bring a wrathful and oppressive reign. But the true tension lies in the fractured relationships within Haven itself, where trust has eroded, and dark forces—both human and divine—emerge from the shadows.

The vivid world-building, combined with complex political intrigue, captivated me. My favorite moments in the book are the smaller, quiet exchanges between characters during lulls in the battle. These brief pauses remind us of the human cost of war and how individuals, even amidst ruin, seek connection and meaning. Dimitri’s struggle to reconcile his loyalty to his fallen king with the desire to protect his people from an ever-growing threat is particularly moving. The philosophical questions raised about power, corruption, and what it means to fight for freedom give the book a depth that lingers beyond the action scenes.

To improve the book, some sections could benefit from more development of the antagonists, particularly the leaders of the invading forces, whose motivations, while clear, lack the same emotional resonance as the protagonists.

Readers who prefer fast-paced action without much introspection may not appreciate the book’s reflective tone. However, those who enjoy intricate world-building, morally complex characters, and a story that explores the delicate balance between power and unity will find this novel deeply rewarding. It reminds me of The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, with its similarly bleak, war-torn setting and its examination of flawed heroes in a morally ambiguous world.

Immortal Sins is like a storm over a broken land—merciless, tumultuous, yet carrying with it the faint hope that after the clouds clear, a new dawn might rise for those who choose to stand together.
